The Bashō-an International English Haiku Competition

MATSUO Bashō lived in “Bashō-an (thatched cottage) in Fukagawa (current address: Tokiwa, Koto city, Tokyo) in the latter part of his life.

Bashō’s well-known haiku was composed at this Bashō-an;

The Bashō-an International English Haiku Competition is held to encourage people to compose haiku or enjoy it in English.
Anyone composing English haiku now or trying to compose it can participate in this competition from anywhere in the world

Guidelines for submission to the 9th Bashō-an International English Haiku Competition

Eligibility

Anyone is welcome to submit your English haikus, regardless of your experience of composing haiku.

Submission Period

Please submit your English haikus between August 9 and October 31, 2026 (Japan Standard Time).

How to Submit

  • Please submit your haikus, using the entry form on this competition website.
  • You can submit one haiku per entry, with a maximum of 10 haiku per person. 11thsubmission of your haiku will not be accepted. You can submit your entries in multiple batches separately during the submission period. Please arrange each haiku in English in 2 or 3 lines.
  • When submitting, please include your name, pen name, mailing address, gender, age, and email address. (your gender and age as an option) *Please do not submit double submissions, using some ways including different name and mail address. If the duplicate submissions are confirmed, both submissions are invalidated.
  • Submitted haiku must be original and unpublished works. If it has been submitted for other competitions, posted on social or it is very similar to existing works, it will be disqualified.
  • The organizers may correct spelling errors in submitted English haiku.
  • Submitted haikus must not contain content to offend against public order and decency.
  • Submitted haikus can not be modified or returned. Please check your submission carefully to prevent any errors.

Results

The winners of the Bashō-an Award will be notified by email at the end of January 2027. Recipients of the Bashō-an Award are requested to submit your photo and comment as the award winner.

Announcement

The winners of the Bashō-an Award will be announced on the competition website and in the Koto City Culture and Community Foundation’s newsletter, “Culture Navi KOTO (March 2027 issue).” The prize-winning work of the Bashō-an Award also be published in the booklet of “the 2027 46th Shigureki Haiku Competition’s Selected Haiku Anthology.”
Selected works will be announced on the website of Bashō Museum.

Privacy Policy

Personal information provided with the submission will not be used for any purpose other than this competition. The winning haiku, together with the submission's pen name (or real name) and place of residence (city, country), will be made public. (Age, gender, detailed address, email address, and other contact information will not be made public.) We appreciate your understanding that a country name input at the submission may differ from the name at the announcement for some reason.

Handling of Copyright

The copyright and secondary use of the announcement, publication of prize-winning works and selected ones belongs to the Koto City Bashō Museum.

芭蕉庵国際英語俳句大会について

ここ江東区深川（現在の江東区常盤）は、松尾芭蕉が晩年住んでいた「芭蕉庵」があったところです。
芭蕉の著名な俳句、「古池や蛙飛びこむ水の音」は、この芭蕉庵で作られました。
芭蕉庵国際英語俳句大会は、英語で俳句を作り、楽しんでもらうために開催します。
世界中の、英語俳句を楽しんでいる方、これから始めてみたいと思っている方、どなたでもご参加ください。

第9回 芭蕉庵国際英語俳句大会　募集要項

応募資格

本大会は経験や国籍を問わず、どなたでもご応募いただけます。

応募期間

2026年8月9日（日）～10月31日（土）の間に応募してください。

参加方法

  • 本大会ウェブサイトの投句フォームからご応募ください。
  • 応募は1回につき1句、1人最大10句まで応募できます。11句目以降は受け付けいたしません。応募期間中であれば、複数回に分けて応募することができます。1作品（俳句）につき、英語で、2～3行スタイルで作ってください。
  • 応募の際、参加者の氏名、ペンネーム、現住所、性別、年齢、メールアドレスをご入力ください。（性別・年齢は任意です。）（※氏名やメールアドレスを変えるなどして重複応募することはご遠慮ください。同一人物による重複応募が確認された場合は、応募を無効とする場合がございます。）
  • 応募作品は、応募者本人の未発表のものに限ります。他の大会に投句された作品やSNS等に掲載された作品の投句はお控えください。二重投句、類想句は入選取消となります。
  • 応募作品の英語のスペルの誤りを事務局で修正する場合があります。
  • 応募する俳句は、公序良俗に反しない内容とします。
  • 応募後の俳句の修正・返却はできません。ご投句の際は入力内容にお間違いがないか今一度ご確認ください。

芭蕉庵賞を受賞された方には、2027年の1月末にメールにてご連絡致します。
受賞者には、受賞者コメントおよび顔写真のご提供をお願いいたしております。

結果発表

芭蕉庵賞受賞作品は、本大会ホームページおよび公益財団法人江東区文化コミュニティ財団広報紙『カルチャーナビKOTO』（2027年3月号）で発表します。
また、芭蕉庵賞受賞作品は『第46回時雨忌全国俳句大会入選句集（2027年）』に掲載、入選作品は、芭蕉記念館ホームページで掲載します。

個人情報について

応募時に提供いただいた個人情報は、本大会の運営以外の目的には使用しません。
受賞作品については、作品、ペンネーム（または氏名）、居住地を公表します。
年齢、性別、住所詳細、メールアドレス等連絡先は公表しません。
なお、応募時に入力された国名と、発表時の表記が異なる場合がございます。予めご了承ください。

著作権の取り扱いについて

受賞作品および入選作品の発表や出版に関する著作権は、二次利用を含め、江東区芭蕉記念館に帰属するものとします。
